The Engineering Services Examination 2019 conducted by UPSC will lead to hundreds of jobs in various departments of Indian Engineering Services. The competition is going to be intense. Thousands of candidates from all over the country compete in exams. Provided you are successful in the written exam, you are called for a personal interview. The interview is usually conducted by a board comprising of a chairman and 3 members from UPSC. The interview is a straightforward process but, still, you need to prepare.

Here are some interview guidance tips for ESE 2019 to help you crack the interview. Your presence of mind, manners, aptitude and general awareness as well as appearance are taken into account during the interview.

  • First you will introduce yourself. Practice before a mirror or with the help of a friend in order to know, you have the correct deportment and a well modulated voice.
  • Check your looks. Dress in formals and take care of your hair, face, nails and overall looks in order to be neat and presentable.
  • Reach the venue ahead of time and compose yourself.
  • When it is your turn, enter the room, greet everyone and sit when asked. Make sure your mobile is switched off or is in silent mode.
  • When you sit please do not twiddle thumbs, make gestures or keep shaking your legs.
  • Prepare yourself to respond to questions promptly without stuttering. Listen to a question and understand it. If you do not understand say so and request that the interviewer repeats it. Most commonly asked questions will relate to why you wish to join IES, why you should be chosen, what your strength and weakness are and about your hobbies. Interviewers wish to make sure you have the attitude and commitment to be an engineer in the IES. Do not be long-winded in answers. Always be brief and to the point. If the interviewer wishes he can ask you to elaborate and then you can go into details.
  • When it comes to questions of a personal nature like your hobbies, give a truthful answer and be prepared to demonstrate if asked. Stick to the truth, not just for hobbies but also for other questions. If you do not know the answer, do not bluff but say so. Also, please refrain from crowing about your achievements when asked about them. Just state facts.
  • When you talk please do not be in a rush. Enunciate
  • Do not get into an argument with any interviewer. Just agree that, yes, it is a point of view.
  • At the end of the interview please do not forget to thank them all and then leave.
